Forsaking All Others

The 1998 wedding of Phillip and Harley was quite the event on GL. Not only because it united a very popular couple in holy matrimony, but because the "uniting" was done by none other than Rudy Giuliani himself, who was mayor of New York City at the time.

I wasn't actually a fan of this couple, but I do realize that they were wildly popular with a lot of fans and they certainly made a good match, sharing as they did a great passion for insulting, humiliating, and controlling Beth. LOL! In all seriousness, The Phillip/Harley pairing is significant for being very much an emblematic icon of this particular era of GL. They, along with Danny and Michelle, are the unions people think of most when recalling this era. The four of them (along with Reva, of course) were the prime movers and shakers of the canvas, definitively and finally bringing the show out of the '91 to '96 period. (Remember when I characterized 1997 as a conspicuous year of change in the Kaleidoscope blog entry?)

And speaking of Reva, Forsaking All Others gives us a nice look at Annie's (quite successful!) plot to take control of Josh's mind through the power of fragrance as Reva interrupts a secret meeting between "Teri DeMarco" (Annie's new guise) and Sit-Down-Josh! Poor Robert Newman must have been in hell playing this ridiculous story, which was the work of myth-makers Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown. This the team that was responsible for Reva being cloned, Hart's boxing match with Death, worst of all, Holly kidnapping the children of Springfield. For those who don't know, these people have just now in 2007 been hired at ALL MY CHILDREN as the new headwriting team, so good luck to anyone who still watches AMC! (Yikes!)
This set features two other events: Alexandra's intial clash with Vicky and the death of Jenna. As such, this clipset provides another very nice panoramic view of GL at this time. Combined with Parent Trap (Holly kidnapping the children) and Welcome to the Family (beginnings of Michelle and Danny), you get a pretty clear picture of this period.

And so, enjoy Forsaking All Others--
